Knights
What began as a weekly reading circle became a force for change.

Bastrop Literary Knights invites readers to explore the vibrant history of Bastrop, Texas, where three remarkable women transformed a weekly gathering into enduring public service.
Founded on a sweltering September afternoon in 1897, the Bastrop Ladies Reading Circle became a lasting force for civic and cultural improvements, historical preservation, and literacy within the community. Members shaped the town through unforgettable initiatives—from founding the first public library at 1010 Main Street in 1900 and championing local legislation to eliminate livestock from freely roaming downtown and residential streets to developing one of the town’s first public parks, Old Ferry Park, and the award-winning Bastrop County Historical Society Museum. Against the backdrop of changing times and persistent local and national challenges, these women defied expectations and inspired generations, helping to forge a community that is today defined by its dedication to historical preservation, heritage tourism, and progress.
With rich storytelling and vivid detail, this book illustrates the struggles and triumphs in the larger story of the historic community itself. Bastrop Literary Knights is an essential read for lovers of social and cultural history and powerful women’s stories.
